I'll try my best to give this book the review it deserves while not going on and on, but make sure you add this to your wish-list, or purchse now. Definitely worth the wait and buy!Is there anyone more qualified to write this book than Mike Aquilina? He's the standard choice for many Early Church courses in today's seminaries and degree programs, and quite frankly, he's the modern authority on the Church Fathers. No, there is nobody more qualified.Sophia Press made a walk-off home run with this book. The book is closely knit to the television series, but I would say that this book stands alone as a guide to the life of the life of a first century Christian. Using the most up-to-date evidences, recent scholarship, and a writing prose only of which Aquilina is capable, this book was a phenominal read. Highly entertaining, highly informational, I literally stopped all my other reading to enjoy this book because I could not put it down. Vost It's not every day that I get excited about a new television mini-series, in fact, it's not every decade, but we certainly have an exception in A.D. The Bible Continues, and my anticipation has heightened all the more by reading Ministers and Martyrs.Mike Aquilina is the most prolific master of the facts and the significance of the Apostolic Age of the founding of Christianity, and is as masterful a story-teller as he is a relater of truths. This book can clearly stand alone as an intriguing, insightful guide to the key individuals, groups, ideas, and events of those pivotal early years of Christ's Church on earth. Ministers and Martyrs is rich in history, biography, and theology presented in simple, understandable terms. His insights into the personalities, motivations, and actions of "Doubting" St. Thomas the Apostle and St. Paul of Tarsus were among the many intriguing analyses I enjoyed and profited from while reading this book.Christ opened up the minds of his apostles to understand the Scriptures. Through his decades of study of Christ and his apostles, Mike Aquilina opens the minds of modern readers to an understanding of the apostolic age. EVERY viewer of the NBC series, Catholic or not, should read this book By TJ Burdick Whenever mainstream networks take on religion, especially within the realm of Christianity, there tends to be a tinge of showmanship that overshadows the truth that the Biblical account of these stories was meant to illustrate. As a result, many people are led astray as we have seen in the fruits of such projects as The Gospel of Judas and The Da Vinci Code.Sophia Institute Press, however, is out to fix all of that.NBC has launched A.D. The Bible Continues, the sequel to the History Channel’s famed series The Bible. Consequently, Sophia Press has published two books to help Catholics understand the deeper meanings behind each episode.Their ambassador, the legendary Mike Aquilina.We all know Mr. Aquilina was the go-to guy for everything patristics (see The Fathers of the Church, Our Sunday Visitor, 2006), but he’s also established himself as an ace in the even earlier church with his latest title, A.D., Ministers and Martyrs. Mr. Aquilina’s knowledge about the first moments of the Church’s history shows through in every page of this short (142 pages), but very insightful book.Each chapter correlates with the episodes that NBC has created and can be read prior to watching them. He especially highlights St. Peter as a central figure and uses his role as leader of the Apostles to highlight the Catholic teachings of Apostolic succession, the Sacraments, Marian devotion, the Trinity, the Priesthood, the Mass, the location of Rome as the Eternal City, the Magisterium and more, all with Biblical explanations.In essence, this book is an apologists dream that any Catholic can (and should) use to enrich their faith knowledge so as to be able to handle those water cooler conversations at work about the television series.Two aspects that I thoroughly enjoyed from this book were1) Every other page offers footnotes on specific doctrines as well as recommended book for further study on certain themes, and2) The Linguist in me loved the comparison of key texts into latin, greek and aramaic- these tiny details provide the reader with a context so as to understand the true meaning behind words that we have decontextualized and connoted over the last 2,000+ years.A.D. Ministers and Martyrs is a book that should be in EVERY Catholic’s library regardless of whether they watch the series or not. It explains the seedling Church with clarity and simplicity from a highly credible Catholic voice. It also supplies the reader with everything they need (and more) to respond to those who bring up the episodes in conversation.

I Loved the Prayer points,checklist(test) and definitely the Advice... I do not resonate with the guided meditations included in the book. But I love the vibe of this deck. If you feel special connection to crystals, highly recommend. It is very unique and special. Thank you Michael for creating this and the other one. I have both of his decks and adore both of them.

I started the book on a trip abroad and looked for every opportunity to continue reading.The plot, with fun and absurdist twists, takes readers down numerous, interesting paths, including the life and times of a young software executive, ice storms on Long Island, true love and infidelity, parental love and parental abuse -- as well as the implications of pressing two for Spanish.Modern and lively, the writing moves the story along quickly until an ending that will leave readers thinking. A very impressive first novel.

An enjoyable read By Maryam This book is about a young and very successful software engineer who left his past life and lives under a new name.Each chapter happens either in present or past and by each one we find out more about Marco Salazar and the how he became the man he is now and how his past affects and shadows his current life.I really liked the way the book is written and characters are introduced.This book is one of those you want to go further to see what happens.

About the Author

Jeanne Bishop is a public defender and an outspoken activist for the abolition of the death penalty. She speaks throughout the United States in support of gun violence prevention, abolition of the death penalty, forgiveness, and the role of victims in the criminal justice system. Her written work has appeared in The Huffington Post, CNN.com, Sojourners, The Christian Century, the Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicago Tribune, among other publications. She has been featured in several documentary films, including Too Flawed to Fix, Deadline and The Innocent. A graduate of Northwestern University School of Law and a recipient of its alumni award for public service, she practices law with the Office of the Cook County (IL) Public Defender.

When Jeanne Bishop's sister, brother-in-law, and their unborn child were killed by a deeply disturbed teenager, I recoiled at the senselessness of the crime. When I read about her sister's tragically beautiful attempt to leave behind a message of love before she died, I wept. How do you forgive the "unforgivable?" Even though I never met any of the people in this gut wrenching story, my anger against the "subhuman" who committed these horrible acts exploded. How do you forgive a "thing" like that? Jeanne's story takes the reader through the horror of learning a loved one has been murdered to the divine state of grace that enabled her to forgive him. We live in an age when grudges are held over perceived slights and rage is sparked over traffic mishaps. In our deeply "fallen" world literally no-one expects or anticipates forgiveness for a murderer: Lock them up, throw away the key, and when possible, execute them. But over twenty years later, Jeanne writes to the killer and offers forgiveness. At that point many of us would be asking ourselves, "Is she crazy?" I was certain that act of kindness would be lost on such a despicable creature and when Jeanne received a letter from him in response, I steeled myself for the worst. But that is where this story brings us into a whole new realm; the possibility that the “least of these” (and who but a murderer scrapes the bottom of that pit?) can evolve to the point of genuine remorse. Until recently, it was a concept I could not fathom. As a Christian, I have long believed in redemption, yet somehow withheld applying that possibility to those who committed society’s most heinous crimes. I did not grant “lost sheep” status to murderers because I once believed they were beyond that. But, incredibly, Jeanne offered that forgiveness before any evidence of his remorse---and that is where her actions approach the divine. One of the most moving parts in this beautiful book is when Jeanne reaches a point of grace where she contemplates the depth of Christ’s mercy and writes this: “I’d always thought that the only thing big enough to pay for the life of my sister was a life sentence for her killer. Now I understood: the only thing big enough to equal the loss of her life--- was for him to be found.” There are times that life is so challenging and disappointing that I question the reality of God who cares. Jeanne’s book and her miracle of forgiveness restored my faith. One simply cannot reach the spiritual summits she scaled without the help of a God deeply in love with the human race.

By Novel Destination~Used Book Emporium After her sister, brother-in-law and their unborn child are murdered, lawyer Jeanne Bishop finds her faith in God shaken. This book is a treatise about her search for answers about forgiveness and mercy.Initially she feels relief that the murder suspect is found and charged. But the disturbed young man was from a family known by her family well enough that their families exchanged Christmas cards.Watching the trial each day, Jeanne and her family are pleased to see that David Biro would be sentenced to life in prison without chance of parole (he was a juvenile at the time of the slayings). But that was not the end of the story. Ms. Bishop left her lucrative job in a major law office to join the Office of Cook County, IL. Public Defender. Being an educated woman with connections to great mentors, activists and other leaders, the author continued to question her thoughts about appropriate sentencing guidelines, her faith and the one person she had never truly forgiven-David Biro. Her description of various legal processes and visiting prisoners is spot-on. She is equally good about including specific Bible verses that aided her in her search for ideas that would help her find a way to meld her Godly faith and her human feelings in a meaningful way...in a way that she could live with it comfortably. In doing so, Ms. Bishop moved from strong feelings about criminal punishment at the strongest levels to activism for chance of parole for youthful offenders. She shares some comments about other cases of heinous crimes by juveniles, making it clear that she knows other families have also suffered terribly.Is my mind changed 100%? No-but I feel shaken enough to begin my own quest for answers. This book is very well-written and an easy read---if you keep some tissues nearby.I was given a copy of this book to read by the publisher but that did not affect my review in any manner.

David Biro, at the time a 17 year old high school student, murdered Ms Bishop's pregnant sister and brother in law. Nothing about this tragedy makes sense. A young family senselessly murdered in an affluent neighborhood. The murderer is convicted and sentenced to life without parole. It most cases, this is where the story would end. In Change of Heart, this is where the store begins. Ms Bishop evolves from a traditional victim searching to make sense of the random violence to questioning how God could let this happen. This is the story of her journey and ultimately the answers she discovers. Heartbreaking and uplifting, this story will move you. A remarkable combination of faith, compassion, dignity and grace will leave you questioning everything you ever believed about our criminal justice system.

About the Author Después de estudiar teología durante 3 años como interno en la Escuela Bíblica Evangélica de Villa María, Provincia de Córdoba, Argentina, José Reina se gradúa en el Colegio Nacional de Montserrat, dependiente de la Universidad de Córdoba, como Martillero Público y Judicial. En 1976 contrae matrimonio con Priscilla Baker (quien también estudió durante 3 años en la misma Escuela Bíblica) y se establecieron en la ciudad de Córdoba donde fueron activos en la iglesia donde asistían. Mientras que también el Señor los bendijo con cuatro hermosos niños. En 1986 fueron bautizados en el poder del Espíritu Santo colaborando en la campaña del evangelista Carlos Annacondia. En julio de 2002 parten para Estados Unidos, donde permanecen un año, para luego viajar a España y radicarse en Málaga. La Iglesia Fuente de Vida tiene sus comienzos en junio de 2004. Teniendo un énfasis especial en la enseñanza de la Palabra de Dios, y continuando con el Instituto Bíblico Palabra de Fe, cuyo lema: “Preparando obreros para la cosecha mundial”, ilustra el propósito de este ministerio de enseñanza, claramente establecido en el mandamiento del Señor Jesucristo: “Id y haced discípulos a todas las naciones,… enseñándoles que guarden todas las cosas que os he mandado;…” (S. Mateo 28:19a; 20a).

I was disappointed to see a tiny booklet and the lousy content By sama wickramanayake I bought this for a friend who moved to a new house along with a lucky bamboo plant so she could learn about how to use feng shui in her home. The title says the ultimate guide to mastering feng shui but it only gives you a basic idea about what feng shui is..and doesn't really tell you how to apply feng shui in your home in detail. I was disappointed to see a tiny booklet and the lousy content, not worth for the money you pay.

Powerful message for Christians today By Carole Jarvis "Babylon is the ancient version of our secular society."Against the Flow is a book that combines theology, apologetics, and Christian living - and I simply cannot state how powerful a book this is! Most people are familiar with the fiery furnace and lions' den stories, but not until reading Dr. Lennox's compelling book did I realize how relevant the book of Daniel is for us today.Just like the young Daniel, we live in a pluralistic, tolerant society that is becoming increasingly antagonistic to the Christian faith. Rather than becoming paralyzed by the move toward political correctness, there is much to be learned from the pages of Daniel, and Dr. Lennox has done an incredible job in this book that informs, challenges and inspires.Against the Flow explores the book of Daniel from theological, historical and cultural aspects. While it's not light reading, Dr. Lennox writes in a style that is easy to understand and I often found it hard to put down. There is a wealth of valuable insight - these thoughts about tolerance, for instance . . ."Tolerance asserts the right to have convictions, to make judgments about right and wrong, which differ from those of others. Tolerance does not demand that we accept the opinions, beliefs, and lifestyles of others, but only that we learn to live without forcing them to line up with us. . . . Is it the title, subtitle, picture, author or content? When I first was offered the opportunity to read, review and post about this book, I was super excited! Why? Well, for one a friend and I have been studying the book of Daniel in depth for awhile now. Another reason is that I believe the title is a call to do just that, go against the flow. Finally, it is a well-developed apologetic or commentary on the book of Daniel in the Old Testament.Now, am I still as excited as I was at first? Absolutely, if not more so! The Body of Christ needs to return to preaching the Old Testament and not solely the New. There are many examples we can learn from those who have gone before us as to how to stand firm and against a raging flow. Society as the author states a couple of times and in different ways is okay with people practicing their faith in a church building or privately. They are threatened when people live their beliefs in the full view of the public and hence why we hear, read or see many examples of those who want to silence the voices.Daniel lived in a different society, time, and culture than we do today, but the message of Daniel is as relevant now as it was then. What message? Well, there are many, and God will speak to your heart if you read Daniel along with John C. Lenox’s Against the Flow as an aid to understanding and applying sacred writ.There is a cost to standing up and being counted as a Christ follower. Words of hatred are always being spewed forth without restraint in either written or spoken form. Sometimes it can even be detected through music or movies. Regardless of how the real question is put forth, will you stand against the flow or be swept up by the flow? Do not think it isn’t true because it is, and we all know it as we interact with others or discern it from other media forms.I highly recommend the book and when you purchase one for yourself, consider buying a copy to give to a local library, friend, family member or whomever your path crosses. Hancock UFOs Over South Carolina is an interesting, entertaining, informative little book that one can breeze through basically in one sitting. Nice volume for reading while sitting in front of a fireplace on a rainy day, or lounging on the porch in the summertime. It will NOT send shivers up your spine and not have you shaking in your shoes, because there is nothing here that is particularly terrifying. Thought provoking, I'd suggest, and good intellectual "chew food" for mulling over the long running (and seemingly never-ending) mystery of weird things seen in the skies...AND on the ground! Just 104 pages overall and many of those are illustrations. But it IS well researched and well written and would definitely come in handy as a info source for UFO buffs in general, and for those living in South Carolina (as does this reviewer) in particular.One of the "de rigeur" requirements of such tomes as this is that the author spends a tad of "set up" time going through the pros and cons of UFO reality (or non-reality) of "Flying Whatchamacallits" in the sky. Carmichael does this succinctly and then moves on to his sighting case histories, all of which ring true to this reviewer....and, in many cases ring FAMILIAR.I personally, have NO difficulty in "believing" what Carmichael writes about here. I served in Army Intelligence for four years back "in the day" (1968-1971) and bumped up on this kind of thing from time to time. Worked operationally for both the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Defense Intelligence Agency. It was during my DIA-attached period (1971) that I worked for a research project in Northern Virginia (Warrenton. Vint Hill Farms Army Security Agency Signal Intelligence Station) called "Project Lefirm Armour" (don't get antsy....my 30-year confidentiality obligation has expired now, and, besides, the project was discontinued years ago). Lefirm Armour was an attempt to develop Over-The-Horizon (OTH) detection of Soviet & Chinese guided missile launches (or cosmonaut space launches in the case of the Russians); this because the government wanted a system that would alert the continental U.S. to "incomings" (in the event of attack) BEFORE the enemy missiles came over the earth's horizon. The curvature of the earth BLOCKED radar detection UNTIL "incomings" cleared the horizon. I won't go into all the theory of how this was to work, because it is pointless for this discussion. Anyway, we COULD detect stuff (and DID), and dutifully reported what we found and analyzed. We found, ultimately, that satellites did a MUCH more effective job of this , and so, eventually, Lefirm Armour had its "plug pulled". While it WAS operating, though, we DID pick up "bogeys" now and then---things that had odd behaviors in the atmosphere and that obviously were NOT Soviet or Chinese hardware. All such "bogeys"...UFOs...were reported straightaway to NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) at Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado, where they maintained a special "desk" for such things known as NIIC (National Intelligence Indications Center...pronounced "Nick"). Things also went to the Air Force OSI (Office of Special Investigations), Air Intelligence, and to what was termed DEFSMAC (or just "Smack"), the Defense Space Missile Activity Center at National Security Agency headquarters at Fort Meade, MD. ALL these agencies were intensely interested in "bogeys" like this...EVEN THOUGH the OFFICIAL position (post Univ. of Colorado "Condon Report") of the USAF (and the government as a whole) was that there was "nothing TO" UFOs and they were "no longer investigating them".Oh, sure. WE believed that.....NOT. We all knew that the disbanded Project Blue Book had been mostly an "Air Farce" public relations "front" and that other units STILL beat the bushes for the flying "what-evers".I knew long before this that there were strange flying things in the sky , though, because nine years previous to Lefirm Armour I had seen one of the boogers myself, as a fifteen-year-old boy. IN South Carolina, LOL! In semi-rural country, just outside the small Greenville County mill town of Piedmont. My parents owned 21 acres of land (a rectangular plot running lengthwise between the highway & the Saluda River) between the Piedmont town limits and the community of Grove Station, along SC Highway 20, south of Greenville itself. It was the late summer of 1963 and I was a rising sophomore in high school. The assassination of John F. Kennedy was only months away. My cousin from Fayetteville, NC, was staying with me at the time and we were out in back of our house one evening after sundown. My father maintained a vegetable garden back of the house and he had tilled it up for the year just a day or two before. The earth was gray and fresh and moist and felt great between the bare toes of two boys that night. We were out there because there was a colony of bats that lived down in the woods of the "back 20" and they would come out at night and fly around over the garden area looking for varmints as prey. Mice and moles and such. This night the sky was deep purple (not totally black yet) and bright-spangled with stars. Visibility was excellent. The bats swarmed overhead and David and I were having fun throwing sticks and dirt clods up to see them use their "sonar" to avoid our "missiles". They were GREAT at such avoidance. As we continued this tomfoolery we chanced to see a bright light come up over the treeline of the west-northwest horizon, moving right along. It was about as bright as Venus, and, in the night sky, was close to the same size but a slight bit bigger. It was NOT Venus, because we already KNEW where Venus was overhead and this was something else altogether. It COULD be taken to be an earth satellite (Ours or "theirs"), but it seemed lower in the sky than that to us. Seemed to move a bit faster. Heading from west-northwest towards east-southeast. Thought struck us that maybe it was an aircraft but we reasoned we'd see more lights than that, with some of them blinking. We heard no engine noise, but, we realized that it MIGHT be going faster (if it WAS a plane) than sound and might be leaving its engine noise BEHIND it. We figured we'd wait & see if we heard such. After a moment or two we began to INDEED hear engine noise, and thought "There it is! It IS a plane!", but almost as soon as that thought occurred we realized there was something screwy there. The noise should be TRAILING the light (if it was a plane), and therefore playing catch-up from our RIGHT. THIS noise seemed to be coming from BEHIND us...so we turned to look.HO-boy! Back to the east-northeast of us had long been Donaldson Air Force Base, a World War II era installation that had housed until recently the 63rd Troop Carrier Wing of C-124 Globemaster airplanes. Donaldson had recently been closed down (it is now an industrial park), and much of its mission re-located to Shaw AFB (Sumter, SC), but a few things were still there. ONE thing that WAS there was a South Carolina Air National Guard unit of F-102 Delta Dagger fighter-interceptors.....and GUESS WHAT we suddenly SAW headed OUR WAY, running lights ablaze and CLIMBING higher and higher as it came......apparently HEADED straight for our LIGHT IN THE SKY! That very thing! An F-102 Delta Dagger! It looked JUST like it was being vectored on an intercept course right TO that light. We went bug-eyed and turned to check out what was about to "go down". With the F-102 zeroing in, the light suddenly BLINKED OUT! Vanished! Just like somebody had flicked a switch. One second there was a bright light hauling butt across the sky and the next second there was...NOTHING. The F-102 hit his intercept point and there was nothing FOR him there TO intercept! Zilch. Nada. He'd essentially been told "Hasta La Vista, baby". The ANG fighter pilot made a couple of big circles in the sky where there SHOULD have been something to intercept...and HAD been something to intercept....and then took off back in the direction he'd come from, back towards Donaldson.My cousin and I went booking it into our house to tell my eye-rolling, slyly smiling parents about what we'd just seen and basically heard the old saw about "Kids. Such imaginations". We watched the news that night and heard NOTHING, and then searched the newspapers the next day with equal frustration. Nothing. Seemingly nobody else had seen this but us( except for the Air Guard and THEY weren't saying a WORD). I've carried this vivid memory around for years, told numerous people about it, and even asked MUFON if they had any old report data on such an event. Negative. But it happened. And, interestingly, Carmichael's book has some sighting stories that evoke the same kind of experience as we had in '63. There is an instance of jets in seeming pursuit of an object over St. Stephen, SC, a few years back in this book, as well as some discussion of lights that blink out into nothingness. All such references bring back the memory. Carmichael speculates about wormhole possibilities and I have considered that, as well as dimensional "portals" and changes in molecular vibrational rates wherein such a "craft"(?) might change its atomic vibration so that we can't "see" it anymore. In any event, good reference book about very real situations....no matter WHAT any smirking debunker type might try to tell you to the contrary. Recommended.P.S. In an update in the early 1960s of his 1950s book "The Report On Unidentified Flying Objects", former AF Captain Edward Ruppelt, the original head of Project Blue Book, did a bit of an about-face on his original (mostly positive) assessment of the phenomena, and complained that the "saucers" seemed unlikely as you almost NEVER detected them "out there" (in space) or "Coming IN" from OUT THERE. They seemed to just "appear" in our skies. Well, he has a point there. That was what WE experienced at Lefirm Armour with our "bogeys". They sort of appeared, and sort of vanished...like my 1963 light ball. For that reason I don't pay much attention to notions of linear incoming travel from across deep space. Think that is too much thinking "IN the box". I think these things pop in and pop out; most likely through dimensional portals. Lets hear it for John Keel & Jacques Vallee!

Carmichael has done his research and presents each incident without any flourish, just the facts. He covers the entire state with some very interesting and entertaining reporting. A must read for any South Carolinian with an interest in this field.

If you are truly interested in the UFO phenomenon......don't bother reading this book. This book will not pull you in. It will push you to close it.
