By Shaun McAfee First, let me tell you that this book is absolutely stunning. When you open this book for the first time, you'll love the quality of the pages with full color artwork with scenes from the television series. The guide follows each episode, taking study to the important details and reflecting on the messages within. The organization of the book is very well made, and thoughtfully written. Prepare for the show by reading this guide before, or use it as a study guide with each episode. This viewers guide hits the spot for Catholics who want to make the most of the A.D. series!

I found it particularly helpful to know which aspects of an episode where from Scripture and which had been "added" by the script writers. The "before you watch" and "after you watch" sections for each episode are also useful. I like the challenge of some of the "Go Forth and Evangelize" sections. Having a closing prayer section makes this book a good tool for groups to use.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The politically corrected version By David056 Abingdon Press is delighted to tell us in the Publisher's Preface that they have only made minor revisions. They go on to say, "The updates include spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and some language usage and references that would distract or confuse the reader." Then they go on to explain the sort of things they have had to change to prevent their stupid readers from being distracted or confused. "References to 'humanity', no longer as 'men' or 'mankind', have been updated. Some references to God have been recast to avoid masculine pronouns." So no referring to God as He. That's masculine. But surely Jesus refers to His Father 160 times in the New Testament? Isn't that masculine?

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Love This Daily Devotion By Sadie Girl Stanley Jones writes this devotion in such an intellectual but simple to understand way of leading you to understand how and why to go God's way which leads to life. I recommend this for people who are searching for truth and need a map to lead them down the path of the Way. I have bought extra books for friends. This is the original manuscript that I recommend people have. He makes a updated version which is not as rich as this one. This book was his master piece and last book he wrote before he went to Heaven. This book will comfort you and help you understand Gods love for you and how life without him is chaos. This is a great book for people who are into the New Age philosophies as his writings and background are from India, where those ideas originated. He was a friend of Ghandi. This book will build deep foundation in spiritual truths from the bible. Great for someone afraid to read the bible but needs a compass in life for direction to the source.

This year my wife and I are reading from "The Way". As usual, his mastery of the English language, and understanding of the Christ of The Way melt into one of the most readable, must challenging devotionals I've every picked up. E. Stanley Jones has become my friend over the years -- always challenging me to go a little further with my thinking, then go a little further with my life in Christ. You will not be disappointed -- challenged, but not disappointed.

We often hear that science and religion are incompatible, and that those of us who profess faith in God are unwilling to bend our will to the truth.

In these pages, the prolific inventor and rocket scientist Dr. Rocco Martino exposes the fallacy and danger of such claims. He tackles head-on the question of truth, showing that despite all the technological and scientific discoveries of our age, religious truth has never been and will never be proven to be in error.

Faith, Dr. Martino explains, is an indispensible element in any search for truth, even for scientists using the scientific method. In clear and easy-to-understand language, he carefully bridges the gap between faith and reason, showing that truth cannot possibly be discovered without the balanced application of both principles.

In a very rational way he shows how we must use reason as a tool to accept or reject truth claims, and why faith coupled with revelation must serve as the final determinant for acceptance.

When we approach scientific discoveries with the mind of faith, we inevitably come to a much deeper understanding of who we are and how we came to be. Indeed, science heightens our ability to prove the existence of God and it, ultimately, strengthens our faith.

Read these pages and you'll enter into the mind of a rocket scientist well-versed in philosophy and theology, journeying with him as he looks for God, and then at God.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. The truth is out there By Dr. Morbius I teach astronomy courses at a small college in New England. I had worked for NASA and then migrated into academia; it's a rewarding new career for me. Students often ask me questions about God and the cosmos and I am happy to engage them in classroom discussions. First, the news media often paints a skewed picture that scientists and teachers of science are all atheists. Not true! Many toiling in scientific and engineering fields attend church, temple, mosque, and ashram. Some are secure in their faith others practice, but retain a healthy (in my opinion) agnosticism. Be that as it may, Dr. Martino's impressive academic career in the field of aerospace science (as well as his Roman Catholicism) provides him with a thoughtful, clear and instructive voice in the often noisy discussion about science and religion. I would love to meet and get to know the author; I believe he has much more to say on this subject. As I tell my first-year students, science answers the big question of "what", but religion seeks the "why". In the end, "why" may be more important. "Rocket Ships and God" adds grist to the discussion; it's a "mile marker" on the long trek in understanding the cosmos and our place in it. Highly recommended for those who want a context in which to better integrate their spiritual and scientific sides.

Calcium Bentonite Clay: Nature’s Pathway to Healing Balance, Detox, Stimulate, Alkalize, by Perry A~

    About the Author "

Perry A's background is as diverse as the clay she loves talking about. From city girl to country girl and points in between, and a lifelong Texan, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas Tech University with a background in chemistry, biology and veterinary science that has contributed greatly to her knowledge base for understanding the intricate workings of clays.     After graduating, she married her college sweetheart, had two daughters and lived in the small farming community of Seymour, Texas. The marriage ended in a divorce after 27 years, and her first job as a probation officer opened her eyes to the fact that she could motivate people. She went on to become a successful motivational keynote speaker and has written several books under her speaker name, Perry A~.     She became a student of clays in the early 1990s after being introduced to a green Calcium Bentonite Clay. Her passion and curiosity led her away from her speaking career and on a new journey of research and discovery into the amazing healing potential of Calcium Bentonite Clays. She has been an advocate for this clay ever since.     She simplifies the complex chemistry and research data while introducing readers to the intriguing properties of Calcium Bentonite Clay. Today she gives interviews and lectures about using and mixing clays. To say she is passionate about educating people to this age-old curative is an understatement.      Her greatest joy is when she hears her grandson, Jack, tell people, ""You need to put some clay on that!""

It is very encouraging and exciting to learn all about how to reap the benefits of this wonderful substance to enhance our health and wellbeing. I am a lot more motivated to use the clay I have now after reading this book. I love how there is so much scientific background on Bentonite, but I what I love more than that is all the history and experiences people have had using the clay and what it has done for so many. Excellent read.

Good Hair: A Novel, by Benilde Little

From Publishers Weekly Entering the terrain of the African American upper class previously explored by Dorothy West and Andrea Lee, Little makes a distinctive debut. She shows a discerning eye for class divisions among socially mobile blacks and an astute insight into the damaged psyches that can result. Her protagonist is a middle-class African American woman whose values are called into question when she meets the crown prince of Boston's black bourgeoisie. Mount Holyoke graduate Alice Lee, now a newspaper reporter living in Manhattan, somewhat reluctantly falls in love with Mt. Sinai surgeon Jack Russworm, "a Black Ward Cleaver, who made a million dollars a year and dressed in Armani." But Alice, who grew up middle-class in Newark, worries about Jack's carefully maintained distance from the experience of less fortunate African Americans. Jack is a blue blood. Like others in his old-money, old-school crowd, he practices an unthinking elitism and social cruelty. As the couple moves closer to marriage, insecure Alice must confront the fact that many of her values seem to have more to do with wish-fulfillment than reality. Little shows skill in creating complex, well rounded characters?most crucially, Jack, who, although snobbish, naive and concerned with appearances, is at heart a good man. More than subtle class differences threaten his and Alice's relationship, however; a sexual misadventure almost parts them for good. Bill Cosby's cuddly "Dr. Huxtable" made the BUPs (black urban professionals) standard household fare, although Cosby muffled the stresses by removing the sting. Little's characters have their stingers intact, and her candid assessment of several generations of blacks whose aspirations are mixed with frustration and shame, as well as her portrayal of the small, closed society that W.E.B. Du Bois called the Talented Tenth, make this a compelling read. Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Negro Geography By Yasmin Coleman On a cold, dreary winter day and anticipating nothing better than curling up with a good book I decided to give Benilde Little's debut novel Good Hair a chance. Mind you this book had been sitting on my bookshelf for almost a year and I wasn't overly enthused or anxious about reading it but there was just enough information on the book jacket to entice me regarding what I hoped would be a light, quick and entertaining read. Good Hair lived up to the challenge! I really enjoyed this book...and was pleasantly surprised. The story is told in first person from Alice, the protagonist, point of view. It's the story of a most unlikely romance between Alice a hard working, first generation college educated sista who falls for Jack the by-product of an upper middle class, privileged AA family and a third generation doctor. Along the way we really get to know Alifce and the story seems almost autobiographical in nature as we journey with Alice from her childhood through the present as she struggles with day-to-day encounters and tries to find herself in the midst of it all. The storyline was spiced with pointed insight regarding contemporary issues such as spousal abuse, incest/sexual abuse, suicide, homosexuality, betrayal, self-esteem as well as caste issues among AAs. Good Hair was grammatically well written and the storyline flowed, however, at times, it also felt like a casually plotted storyline with sketchy characters, sometimes stilted dialogue, and a multitude of loose end situations. I believe that the storyline had the potential to be even better if (1) greater character development was displayed beyond Alice's character; I especially would have liked to hear Jack's point of view vs. being told about him from primarily Alice's perspective; (2) stronger ending...I was really disappointed in the ending which seemed trite and predictable. Then again the ending did leave room for a sequel. Overall Good Hair was a good read and it held my interest so much so that I was able to finish the book in one setting. Ms. Little's writing style piqued my interest and I will also give The Itch-her sophomore novel- a chance.

She kept me reading and reading and I didn't want to put it down. This book describes the lives of many young women who find love when they least expect it. The only thing that left me hanging was the end. It left me wondering what happened after the marriage and whether or not Ms. Sherry was actually pregnant. But overall its a WONDERFUL novel. Keep up the good work Ms. Little.

BOOK LEFT MUCH TO BE DESIRED By A Customer Aside from the cheap shots taken at Rutgers (where I am a student), I really enjoyed the beginning of the book where the author introduced Alice's experiences growing up in Newark, NJ because this is the only well developed portion of the book. It allowed Alice to introduce herself to the reader, whereas the other characters were not as well developed. This could stem from the fact that Alice is telling the story in the first person. In other words, Alice doesn't allow the reader to learn more about the other characters in the book, i.e.- Jack, the other main character, because she doesn't really know them herself. It's as though her superficiality (Coach this, Ferragamo that) is evidenced in the book through her shallow examinations of the other characters. Readers witness them on a surface level only. However, this explanation in no way compensates for my disappointment with the character development. It's just an observation. Little's The Itch suffered the same problem.I would have loved for Alice to relay some of the stories of Jack's childhood and young adulthood, the experiences in his life that made him who Alice fell in love with (that is, if she was really in love with him and not his status). He was represented as an oftentimes naive man, but there was only one instance of his naivete in this book (the cheating). I needed more proof since this was his mom's excuse for the cheating, for which Alice forgave him.I would really love to see more novels written by a more seasoned Little that introduce and more deeply examine the lives (not just the twisted events, but the thoughts, feelings and ideas of these people in an authentic voice)of the black, upper-class. The Itch and Good Hair are the only books of this severely underrepresented genre. Little alluded to the cause of this shortage and the problems with Good Hair that I've discussed in The Itch: a system that repackages black art for an assumed homogeneous mass black market, i.e.-the film that broke even in The Itch. In the end, the artist can not recognize his or her own work and the "mass market" isn't given a chance to witness the artist's true vision. This is probably Little's apology for not being able to deliver a better book with her first attempt, Good Hair.

How would you respond if you knew that people were reading you? Would you have a desire to inspire and influence, or would this knowledge make no difference? The answer to these questions will not make you or break you, but they will reveal you; Your character. Your conduct. Your conversation. Since we are hardwired to “read”—whether observing, scrutinizing, or analyzing—you can automatically assume your “cover and content” are being read. With that being said, R U LEGIBLE? In U MAY B THE ONLY BIBLE SOMEBODY READS, Maher explicitly communicates the clearest doctrine every person publishes is his own example. Using personal legible and illegible experiences from his own life, as well as innovative and practical insights, Maher stimulates the reader to interactively read knowing they too will be read outside the pages. With the 11 unique laws of biblical influence introduced in this book, learn how to discern and leverage influence to the watchful “I’s” around you. An individual may have no clue what is printed between Genesis and Revelation, but the truth is—the genesis of your conviction dictates the revelation (unveiling) of your gospel. The message you’re putting out. Therefore, if you claim to be a believer, would anyone want to be a follower of Jesus Christ based on the way you live your life? “Example prospers or plunders based on conduct,” says Maher, “And your depth of character will determine your length of influence. Apply the truths in this book and you’ll be a legible presentation of the Christ. Violate the truths in this book and you’ll be illegible--a contradiction of Christ. The choice is yours. Let the Bible revival begin inside of you.”

From the Author Hi, I'm Z Altug and I wrote Sustainable Fitness to help you achieve your health and fitness goals. I am very grateful for my patients and clients in physical therapy and fitness for encouraging me to write this book.   Research is ever-changing, and so are the science and art of medicine. The views expressed today might be modified, adapted, or obsolete in the future. It is my hope that you stay informed of the latest developments in science and medicine. Attend community health lectures at local hospitals or colleges. Discuss controversial medical topics or new scientific findings with your healthcare provider. Your healthcare professional's priority is to keep you healthy. Please utilize his or her expertise.   I wish you good health and happiness during your journey in life.   Sincerely,   Z Altug

From the Inside Flap Dear Reader,   Sustainable Fitness: A Practical Guide to Health, Healing, and Wellness can be used by a wide range of people, including the following: · Individuals looking for simple tips and guidelines to supplement the advice provided by their healthcare professionals. However, there is no substitute for proper medical care. · Healthcare professionals (such as physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, athletic trainers, nurses, chiropractors, osteopaths, and acupuncturists) and also fitness professionals (such as personal trainers, exercise physiologists, and practitioners of yoga, tai chi, qigong, Pilates, the Feldenkrais Method, and the Alexander Technique) to educate their patients or clients on evidence-based self-management strategies for health, healing, and fitness by creating personalized handouts from the book. · Coaches to discuss various performance-enhancing behaviors with their athletes. · Parents to discuss various healthy lifestyle behaviors with their children to take advantage of the prime growing and learning years. This way, children do not lose out on any years of wellness.   The book is written in a format that largely uses bullet-points, checklists, tables, charts, and boxes to help readers easily extract and use the information. The book serves as a resource manual and a quick reference source for health, fitness, and wellness guidelines. I originally developed much of the content in handout form for my patients and clients. No person is without some bias. For this reason, I have listed multiple references at the end of the book, not only as additional sources, but also for the reader to use to find different viewpoints. Please note that the references listed in each section are not intended to be comprehensive for every topic, but rather to provide a sampling of available research. I provide limited portions of direct quotes from each study referenced. For more detail surrounding the direct quotes and sources, and for ways to access the full sources, please refer to the References section at the end of the book and the Research Resources section on page 471. Please note what Sustainable Fitness is not about: ·       Promising miracle cures or quick-fix solutions. ·       Promoting a specific product or sales pitch. I have no conflicts of interest to disclose. ·       Providing a specific diet or one-size-fits-all exercise routine. Every person has the freedom of choice to pursue whatever lifestyle, activity, sports, or exercises he or she wishes. This book simply outlines guidelines for making healthful choices. · Providing a self-help book to be used independently of guidance from your healthcare provider. This book is designed to be used in conjunction with advice from your healthcare provider.   Sustainable Fitness is about incorporating the following elements into your lifestyle: · Adaptability · Balance · Enjoyment · Freedom of choice · Harmony · Longevity · Minimalism · Quality of life · Repeatability · Renewability   Sustainable Fitness has six underlying concepts. Applying and integrating all these principles will help the reader recover and attain his or her highest fitness level:   1. Purpose--Define your purpose in life, work, family, and community. Can you clearly define your purpose in life? Is your purpose to care for others, create music, write or edit, paint, provide security, supply food, entertain, sell or deliver goods, build things, work as a professional athlete, or be a good parent, grandparent, teacher, coach, or coworker? Do you have a strong sense of family, friendship, and community?   2. Habits--Adopt healthy habits, such as living smoke-free, drinking alcohol only in moderation (if at all), and engaging in creative hobbies which not only promote good health, but also make a small difference in your community. What are some positive changes you are looking to make?   3. Stress--Live in balance and with peace of mind. What ways have you found to release stress triggers, avoid anger, and live your life without rushing?   4. Sleep--Get adequate sleep and rest for optimal recovery. Do you get enough rest every night and wake up feeling refreshed?   5. Nutrition--Eat nutritious and wholesome foods that nature designed for us. Can the foods you typically eat be found in nature, or are they artificial and manufactured?   6. Exercise--Engage in pain-free, enjoyable exercise that is sustainable. Does your exercise program energize and refresh you, or does it wear you down?   Many concepts in this book are presented using the original terminology from the researchers. The purpose of this is to add depth to the topics, since many people in the general public are interested in the details of medical research. However, if research is not your cup of tea, then please feel free to focus on the practical explanations provided throughout the book. I wish you good health and happiness.   Respectfully,     Z Altug, PT, DPT, MS, CSCS Los Angeles, CA   Note: Some of the proceeds from the sale of this book will help support research in physical therapy and medicine.

I was thinking it is a small book of some sort, but I was surprised this is excellent and a very detailed. It feels like a college text book. Has many types of exercise, lot of injury prevention techniques. Healing and injury is treated in great detail. I am glad nutrition is covered in depth as well. I loved the phytonutrients as I am a whole food plant based person. I also very happy meditation is covered. There are absolutely great resources for you as a person who wants to improve the lifestyle in a great exponential way. There are resources and tools for you to track and improve the fitness every step of the way. I loved the title also. I view fitness of mind, body, spiritual. I am glad the author wrote this book in depth, it will floor you. This book deserves a special place in the library of anyone who cares about their health as well as their loved ones. I was provided with a book for review purposes. Since I am deep into fitness of mind and body, I agreed to review it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not systematic, but not bad By Eric Sedensky When someone sees the title “Sustainable Fitness”, if they’re like me they’ll probably think to themselves, “Just what I need: Another workout book” and they are likely to give this hefty volume by physio-everything guy Z Altug short shrift. That would be a mistake, because this book is filled with useful and interesting information. Unfortunately, that is also this book’s undoing, because it is sort of like reading a compendium of health magazine articles and factoids, as opposed to being a structured methodical approach to improving one’s health. It seems the Mr. (apparently, an alphabet soup of letters after his name does not make him a doctor) Altug has, over the years compiled pamphlets from gleanings and research he has done to help patients and customers understand their bodies, medical issues, health in general, exercise, how the body works, and every topic related to health you can think of. He’s found research that supports his suggestions and findings, which he cites throughout the book, and then stitched it all together into this manual. If ever there was a book that could be called holistic, this is it. He covers everything from what to eat, to how to brush your teeth, to how much sleep to get, to how to strengthen your back, to improving your mental health, to dealing with stress, to what supplements work, what supplements don’t work, to weight training, to running, to what kind of shoes to wear, to...you get the idea. He covers women’s health and men’s health, children’s health and senior’s health, physical health to mental health to emotional health. It is, simply, unending: page after page of “this worked for 9 out of 10 Norwegian men”, “that worked for 80% of women aged 35 to 44 who were stay at home moms”, like that. And like I said, that is this book’s downfall. I read Men’s Health every month, and I find many remarkable similarities to this book. That is, despite all the information that Men’s Health provides each month, it is simply not possible to undertake to do all the good things they suggest, plus do all the workouts, plus cook all the recipes, plus eat blueberries to stave off Alzheimer’s, plus eat salmon three times a week to get enough Omega-3’s, plus, plus, plus. And this book has probably 100 times more information, suggestions, ideas, notions, and possible health tips than Men’s Health, but 100 times more than overkill is nothing less than daunting. In short, this book could stand a lot of editing, compressing, and rewriting, with a structure for formulating and achieving goals. I fear somebody looking for a way to live a better life will get a hold of this book and simply be stunned into “analysis paralysis” by the sheer amount of information it contains. So, if you really are out of ideas for improving your health or your outlook on life (or whatever), or you just want to understand and bask in the scope of possibilities when it comes to well being, this book will be right up your alley. If you are looking for a specific approach to any of those goals, feel free to start with this book, but be prepared to move on to other resources when the time comes to actually doing something. For being probably the single most holistic health book ever written, I give it five stars, but I deduct one each, not only for not staying true to the title and helping to sustain fitness, but also for not really helping to achieve it in the first place.Note: I received a complimentary Kindle edition of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. lots of excellent information and resources, but the format/organization did not work for me By Sneaky Burrito There are a lot of good things about this book and I wanted to highlight them first. This book is long (unlike so many inexpensive Kindle "books" these days) and it is extensive. It covers a wide range of topics that are all related to health. It's also comprehensive. I do love the whole life sort of approach to wellness. It's not just about eating right or exercising (although of course those topics are covered), but about avoiding injury, getting enough sleep, etc. I like the focus on things that people don't always think to mention, but that really are important.Additionally, the author has exceptional qualifications. He's studied physical therapy, physical education, and more, so I definitely trust what he has to say. He also has gone to the trouble to track down resources so you can read outside opinions firsthand. It shows a familiarity with the field and with the literature that is reassuring. However, the format of the book really didn't work for me. I think this content, arranged in a similar way, would make an excellent website. For example, I noticed a number of links to sources as I read this on my Kindle. But I have a Kindle Paperwhite and the browser is clunky and awkward, and I was unable to visit the outside sources as I read. (I mention the model because I believe a tablet like a Kindle Fire might be a very different experience.)The book was a series of bullet points. Again, this is a reason why I think it would work as a website instead of a book -- this is a very natural format for a website. But my own preference is to read longer paragraphs, when I am reading a book. I have dedicated time set aside for reading books, whereas bullet points are more for idle browsing (in my opinion).Organization could also have used some work. There really didn't seem to be any sort of system or method to the way information was arranged. One chapter would be about sleep, then another about vitamin D, then another about mattresses (or something along those lines, anyway). It was also not always clear for whom the bulleted information was meant. As an example, one chapter talks about using an electric jar opener. But it never prefaces that by saying this information is meant for someone with, for example, arthritic hands.I suppose I was just hoping for something more systematic, and I didn't get that here. The style may have appeal for others, it is just not a scheme that appeals to me. And of course, the information comes from a trustworthy source. At midlife, our perspective can become blurry. Midlife is a disruptive season where we collide with limitations on all sides. We recognize there is more of life in the rearview mirror than on the road ahead of us. We wonder if our lives so far have been worthwhile. We are uncertain about what lies ahead. But midlife is also an opportunity to recalibrate our vision. It's a time to look back, take stock of our lives so far, and refocus on new dimensions of identity and calling.Peter Greer and Greg Lafferty offer insight for navigating midlife with fresh clarity and purpose. Drawing on the wisdom of the book of Ecclesiastes, they show how we can come to grips with the realities of who we are and what we should become in the years ahead. In a world that can seem meaningless at times, God offers perspective that anchors us, renews us and propels us back into the world in meaningful mission and service.Rediscover who God has called you to be. And see the rest of your life with the clarity of 40/40 vision.

40/40 Vision: Clarifying Your Mission in Midlife, by Peter Greer, Greg Lafferty

Review "The stereotypes and stories tell us that midlife is an unpredictable and mysterious time, full of temptation and ruin―but what Greg and Peter offer is a clear picture of how unpredictability and mystery are actually opportunities to bring renewed faith and fresh encounters with Christ. Read this book and be equipped to live for what matters most." (Mark Batterson, New York Times bestselling author of The Circle Maker, lead pastor, National Community Church, Washington, DC)"At midlife, we are forced to wrestle with the fundamental question of how to live authentically and make the most of life. In 40/40 Vision, Greg Lafferty and Peter Greer provide biblical and practical insights on how to sort through such issues as busyness, unmet expectations, the pursuit of pleasure, wisdom, injustice and identity. Ultimately, they inspire us to lean into the future, seek our pleasure in God and learn to live redemptively. For those well into the race of life or ready for a fresh start, 40/40 Vision is sure to be an energetic and welcome encouragement." (Ken Wytsma, author of Pursuing Justice and The Grand Paradox)"Finding meaningful work, making sense of disappointments, valuing relationships with those around you―these are the questions that many deal with in the second half of life. Greer and Lafferty help us rethink our relationship to work, expectations and others. They use the ancient wisdom of Ecclesiastes to speak poignantly into the realities (and questions) of modern life." (Gary A. Haugen, president of International Justice Mission, author of The Locust Effect)"Greg and Peter are the friends you want to have as you enter midlife. They remind you of age-old warnings, guide you to healthy practices of flourishing and have you laughing along the way. This is an important book about an important decade, no matter what your age." (Jena Lee Nardella, cofounder of Blood:Water, author of One Thousand Wells)"Midlife can be a dangerous and disappointing time. In 40/40 Vision, Greg and Peter do a fantastic job leveraging lessons from Ecclesiastes to help those of us in this critical season find purpose and satisfaction." (Andy Stanley, senior pastor, North Point Ministries)"As a forty-six-year-old dad with four sons, I can testify that midlife is a turbulent time. It's easy to lose our perspective and stumble at a time when our families need us most. Peter and Greg help us see clearly through the haze of midlife and live for what ultimately matters. I am grateful for their insights and confident you will be as well." (Scott C. Todd, senior vice president for global advocacy, Compassion International)"Having recently turned forty, I'm grateful for how 40/40 Vision provides a great opportunity to reflect on the past and look toward a meaningful future. We don't want this second half of life to slip by. We're invited to live it faithfully and fully―in how we love our families, serve in the world, do our work and seek God." (Kent Annan, author of After Shock and Following Jesus Through the Eye of the Needle)"As I approach my forties, I find myself thinking about what's next and assessing what I've done and have left to do. At a time when all of us at any age can find ourselves pondering our gifts, talents and callings, this book calls us to be hopeful through all seasons and believe that our best is yet to come, no matter our age. Just as Moses didn't start his most notable ministry until later in life, this book invites us to not waste our time thinking what could have been and focus instead on what could be." (Jenny Yang, vice president of advocacy and policy, World Relief, coauthor, Welcoming the Stranger)"I turned forty this year, and I'm happy to report I'm still the same person I was last year . . . but not without a bit of existential angst about the brevity of life. In this timely book, Peter and Greg guide us to reflect on the gifts of growing older, inviting us to learn from past mistakes and refocus on what matters most. This is a book everyone in the midst of midlife needs to read." (Kristen Howerton, founder of Rage Against the Minivan)"The sobering realities of midlife may offer the most opportunity and risk for followers of Christ. During this time, the importance of our ability to thoughtfully reflect and respond to God's call to walk with him cannot be overstated. In 40/40 Vision, Peter and Greg have written an honest and essential guidebook to help us navigate the rest of our days. It's a must-read." (Dave Blanchard, CEO and cofounder of Praxis)"With wisdom and vulnerability, Greer and Lafferty challenge us with questions that really matter―about our identity, our relationships and our plans and purposes. 40/40 Vision is a must-read for anyone wanting to more clearly see a life well lived!" (Tom Lin, InterVarsity vice president and director of Urbana)"40/40 Vision is not just a book; it's also a mirror helping us reflect on the trajectory of our lives. As the psalmist tells us to number our days in order to gain wisdom, see this as a tool to help count. Through the lens of Ecclesiastes, Greer and Lafferty show us it's not a midlife crisis, but a midlife opportunity. If you're hungry to learn from the wisdom of others who have traveled―and who are currently traveling―life's path, this book is for you." (J.R. Briggs, pastor, author of Fail and coauthor of Eldership and the Mission of God)"As I approach forty myself, I have started many of the same exercises that Peter and Greg went through in this new book. I believe great leaders are always learners, and if we don't stop and take a minute to process where we are in life, we could miss some of God's greatest plans for us. I can't wait to get this work into the hands of my colleagues and friends to have these important conversations together." (Tyler Reagin, executive director of Catalyst)"Peter and Greg's book reminds me to look beyond life's repetitive and sometimes seemingly meaningless cycles, to the deepened, perspective-driven wisdom and productivity that await me on the other side of forty. The book weaves practical, real life examples alongside musings of Solomon from Ecclesiastes to engage the reader to reach for a higher world, in living 'above the sun,' no matter the life stage they are part of." (Sarah Cunningham, author of The Well-Balanced World Changer and Portable Faith)"Peter Greer and Greg Lafferty have written boldly into the human experience of midlife and beyond. They have encouraging words for those who find this transit point scary. And they have wise words for those who seek to storm into the second half of life and insist that it be the most productive and satisfying half. Greer and Lafferty get it. They appreciate the great countercultural idea that the Christian gospel offers―that no day is ever wasted, no year is ever lost, no decade of life is ever irrelevant when one's life is grounded in God's purposes." (Gordon MacDonald, chancellor, Denver Seminary, author of Ordering Your Private World, Mid-Course Correction and A Resilient Life)"40/40 Vision is filled with wit and wisdom, as Peter Greer and Greg Lafferty wrestle with the distinction between the meaningful and the meaningless aspects of reaching life's halftime. Honest and vulnerable, they go to the hard places, tackle tough questions and navigate their way back to lasting purpose. I highly recommend this book, regardless of your age!" (Tami Heim, president and CEO of Christian Leadership Alliance)"This book came to me right as I was entering my forties. It had a profound impact on me, altering the way I will view this chapter of my life as well as the trajectory of my future. I am certain it will do the same for you!" (Robert Dickie, president of Crown Financial Ministries)"40/40 Vision landed in my hands at the time I needed to hear the encouraging words from Ecclesiastes. 40/40 Vision is an inspiring, well-written book full of encouragement, no matter where you fall on the age bar. Greer and Lafferty write, 'Midlife is the time to narrow your focus of your to-do list.'" (Bobbie Bomar-Brown, Baptist Standard, December 19, 2015)"Theological seriousness, with real-life illustrations and an anchor in Ecclesiastes, differentiates Greer and Lafferty's book from common, pragmatic treatments for midlife crises. Clear writing conveys the essential message: 'Jesus opened the eyes of the blind, and we long to gain a new perspective like they did. To have spiritual LASIK remove the midlife blur so we can see our way clear of trivial pursuits, selfish ambitions and destructive escapes. To live for what matters most.' By book's end I was filling the margins with notes." (Bill Newton, WORLD Magazine, February 20, 2016)"40/40 Vision takes up themes from Ecclesiastes and walks through them in twelve chapters with good descriptions, illustrative stories, and serious encounters. . . .There's no sugar-coating by Greer and Lafferty, but an honest-face-the-music approach that gently draws the reader to see the situation in all of its starkness. But instead of leaving the middle-lifer in a crisis, the authors offer sage, biblical counsel on how to turn all of this into a mid-life opportunity. 40/40 Vision is skillfully crafted, standing as it does on the foundation of Ecclesiastes. It's a work that is meant to be read, discussed, dog-eared, marked-up, and returned to for years to come." (Michael Philliber, Deus Misereatur, September 18, 2015)"40/40 Vision is a trove of timeless wisdom and timely insight. It penetrates many blind spots of our own era as well as great questions asked throughout history. Ultimately, it points not only to hope on the far side of the forties but also to weighty purpose and a light heart within them." (Jedd Medefind, president, Christian Alliance for Orphans, coauthor, Upended)"Greer and Lafferty will make readers laugh at just the right moments to cushion the lessons of middle age. Christians and nonbelievers alike will find much to mull over as they approach this most ominous midlife point, or as they find themselves on either side of it. . . . Readers will discover that no matter one's age, one's outlook and purpose for living will determine a path through the ups and down of each phase of life. Greer and Lafferty offer a touching, wise guide for making the midlife struggle a worthy one." (Publishers Weekly, September 14, 2015)

Wood An 80-country survey asked respondents, “All things considered, how satisfied are you with your life as a whole these days?” People in their 40s were least satisfied, with 46-year-olds being unhappiest. I am 46 years old. Needless to say, I read Peter Greer and Greg Lafferty’s new book with keen interest. The forties are the decade when men and women experience midlife crisis. They are halfway through their lives equidistant from the start of their professions and their retirement. The twenties and thirties are predominated by questions of success. In the forties, however, questions of significance take the lead.According to Greer and Lafferty, the kinds of questions 40-year-olds ask are these: “All this work, does it even matter? I’ve striven for so long, but I’m still not there—and now I’m losing interest. Why am I not happier? Is this my lot in life? Did I miss my calling? Is it too late for a do-over? Was all that I pursued in my thirties a mistake?”These are questions of meaning. To navigate the turbulence of the forties is thus to navigate the waters of life’s meaning. And few books of the Bible address the question of meaning more acutely than Ecclesiastes. But wait, you’re thinking to yourself; doesn’t Ecclesiastes say that life is meaningless? “‘Meaningless! Meaningless!’ says the Teacher. ‘Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless’” (1:2). If you’re having a mid-life crisis, that’s hardly the kind of statement to cheer you up.True, but as Greer and Lafferty point out, Ecclesiastes’ perspective is that of a “functional deist,” that is, “a person who acknowledges God’s existence but suffers due to his apparent absence.” Such a person can experience great success and pleasure in life, and yet still discover that they don’t guarantee a meaningful life. What is needed is a larger worldview, an above-the-sun perspective. An above-the-sun perspective gives meaning to an under-the-sun life not by pooh-poohing success or pleasure, but by qualifying them, by helping us see the goodness in life’s limitations. For example, chapter 6, “(Un)charitable,” deals with the concept of “true wealth.” Ecclesiastes 5:10 truly said, “Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves money is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless.”But notice the parentheses in the chapter title; they are important. A person focused on getting is uncharitable. But place that negative prefix un- in parenthesis—qualify or limit it—and you discover that wealth isn’t the problem. It’s the lack of generosity. The authors write, “In the United States, we’ve developed super-sized appetites for pleasure, but we haven’t experienced a corresponding rise in our taste for giving.” Accumulating money doesn’t make you happy or filled with a sense of meaning. Being generous with what you have does, however. The same can be said for all the goods we pursue in life. They’re not necessarily bad in and of themselves, but they’re unalloyed goods either. A meaningful life recognizes their limited, qualified, under-the-sun goodness.Only God, who lives “above the sun” is unqualifiedly good, so our search for meaning in midlife must inevitably turn to Him. Of one of the criminals crucified alongside Christ, Greer and Lafferty write: “In many ways, he typifies a wasted life, a nameless man engaged in senseless violence. But during his brief moment on stage, he said a line that goes down as one of the greatest in history: ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom’ (Luke 23:42).” And that request saves him. “Boom. Immortal. One moment of clarity in a life of futility, and everything changes.”Precisely because I’m in my forties, I paid close attention to the advice given in 40/40 Vision, and I recommend it highly, especially if you’re in midlife too. I want my next forty years to be even better than my first forty. I especially recommend reading the book to forty-something pastors. It’s hard enough to lead a congregation under normal circumstances, let alone on top of a midlife crisis. Get help early and often! At the start of this review, I noted that 46 years of age was the low point of unhappiness in that global survey. If that’s where you are today, you don’t have to get stuck there! For, to borrow a phrase from Ecclesiastes, God will make everything beautiful in its time (3:11).

I couldn't put it down and finished it in 2 days. The timing was perfect as I was seeking the Lord for clarity and next steps for our ministry. Peter and Greg provide an honest view into daily life that will resonate well with midlife leaders. In addition, they share some practical ideas to encourage the reader to move forward toward a healthy and fruitful future. I highly recommend this book.

The closer I get to 40 and beyond, the more grateful I am to have an encouraging guide to help me navigate these uncertain waters.40/40 Vision: Clarifying Your Mission in Midlife by Peter Greer and Greg Lafferty takes a close look at the small Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes and what the great king Solomon has to say about the middle years viewed in retrospect. (Disclaimer: I received a free copy of the book in exchange for my review.)I was worried that this book would not be "for me." I know, in part, my mission, and my calling as a writer is not dependent on my age. I'm not going to be forced into early retirement from my freelance career or from writing novels because of my age. I don't feel adrift in my overall calling, though I do sense the need for clarity in some areas. So, I'm happy to report that this book is for me. And you. And whoever is looking at the latter half of their life with fear, confusion, or worry. It's not just a book for those who work full time or minister full time, nor is it just for men, who stereotypically have a "midlife crisis." This is as much a book for a mom whose kids are growing more independent and who is rediscovering her free time as it is for a man stuck in a job he isn't sure matters. It's for the happily married man and the dissatisfied wife. The potential for a midlife crisis is not limited to one certain type of person.Greer and Lafferty show us how to look at our lives--past and future--from the incomparable vantage point of the middle."Opening our eyes to our own mortality and limitations can allow us to live more fully. Midlife is an opportunity to leave some of our youthful folly behind, to look back on our first forty and refocus on what matters most for our next forty--or however long we have. It's a time to prepare for our second act, to get our second wind." (16)I like the idea of midlife being a time of preparation, a chance to catch our breaths and evaluate what has been working in life and what hasn't. This has revolutionized how I view the big 4-0.And the authors don't just address jobs and callings. They tackle issues of mortality, purpose, identity, friendship and building true wealth, among other things. And they do it with stories, both theirs and others, humor and grace. If you feel stuck in the middle of life with little hope for the years ahead, or you dread the onset of middle age, this book will restore your focus to see all the good that lies ahead.
